KOPER – The Port of Koper has a new multi-storey garage with a capacity of 6,000 vehicles. The warehouse was inaugurated yesterday in the presence of the Slovenian Minister of Infrastructure, Jernej Vrtovec. «The government has determined a list of 187 important investments for starting the economy after the epidemic, of which 12 projects are in the Port of Koper», the minister said.
Cars are one of the strategic cargoes in the Port of Koper and have received quite a few critical investments in recent years: last year, they built a dedicated RO-RO berth and an additional rail tracks group in the hinterland Basin 3. In the last months, the government of Slovenia approved the expansion of the concession area in the eastern part of the port, where open storage for vehicles will be arranged. The sites can now store 45,000 cars with the new garage house, whether on 650,000 m2 of open or 145,000 m2 of covered storage areas.
Although the port recorded a decline in throughput last year, there was a rebound in the second half of 2020: Koper ended the year as the fifth largest car terminal in Europe and the first in the Mediterranean.
Yesterday, in the end, a new gate was inaugurated, mainly for container trucks, which represent more than half of the trucks entering the port (a total of 330,000 trucks during 2020). The third entrance has an external parking lot for 44 trucks that truckers can use while they are preparing the documentation for entry.
Luka Koper made the total investment worth 4.4 million euros with the help of EU funds from the Napa4Core project.
