TRIESTE – Ahead of the forthcoming municipal elections at the end of May, the Venice Port Community is asking candidates to state their positions on five key projects involving infrastructure, seabed depths and new terminals to support employment and businesses.
President Davide Calderan has entered the local political debate, calling for clear answers on a number of issues considered central to the port economy. The aim is to understand what vision future administrations intend to adopt on development, infrastructure and the role of the Venetian port.
According to VPC, the port represents a major economic system which – also in light of studies by CGIA Mestre – involves around 26,000 workers and 1,400 companies. For the port community, it remains one of the city’s main productive pillars.
Five themes have been identified as priorities. The first concerns the Tresse 2 island, which has already received a positive environmental impact assessment. The second is the construction of the North Channel, northern side, an intervention considered strategic for maritime accessibility. The third point is the restoration of the seabed depths of the Vittorio Emanuele Channel, with depths suitable for the transit of larger vessels.
These are joined by the position on the construction of the Montesyndial terminal and the maintenance of the Malamocco-Marghera Channel, a fundamental axis for commercial traffic bound for the industrial area.
For VPC, these are indispensable works to ensure continuity and development for the port, with direct effects on businesses and employment. The message is clear: without a clear direction on these infrastructures, the risk is to weaken a sector considered an economic alternative to dependence on tourism.
Calderan stressed that the port cannot be left on the margins of the political debate. The request to candidates is to make their priorities, timelines and operational choices explicit, so as to offer the port system a clearly defined perspective.
