TRIESTE — Four Italian companies have signed new Memoranda of Understanding in Cairo for the development of logistics and railway infrastructure in Egypt, during the international fair TransMEA 2025.
The signing took place in the presence of Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi, on an official visit to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Rixi underlined the strategic importance of Egypt as a hub between the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East. «It is a stable country, with a clear infrastructural vision, and for Italy it represents a natural partner in the development of Mediterranean logistics», said Rixi.
The deputy minister also recalled the Ro-Ro link already active between Damietta and Trieste, which the government intends to strengthen in order to support traffic between Egyptian and Italian ports.
Among the leading companies is Technital, an engineering firm headed by Zeno D’Agostino, former president of the Port of Trieste, which will work with the Egyptian interport authority to draft the master plan for the dry port system. The goal is to create an integrated model linking coastal ports and inland logistics areas.
Mermec, a group specialising in railway technologies, signed a new contract with Orascom, Arab Contractors and Imagro for the supply of diagnostic trains for the Egyptian high-speed network. The agreement, signed by Fabio Pizzolon, Global Sales Director Signalling at Mermec, strengthens the company’s presence in the country, where two other measurement convoys are already in service.
Salcef will take part in the national railway modernisation programme in partnership with local operators, while Arsenale, the Italian luxury rail company, will develop a new high-end tourist service: an Orient Express-style train between Cairo and Aswan, under a twenty-year agreement with Egyptian Railways.
The investments involved amount to several tens of billions of euros and will affect both freight infrastructure and tourism-related projects.
«Italy can offer expertise and capabilities», added Rixi, «in a process aimed at the stability and development of the entire Mediterranean area».
