TRIESTE – Fincantieri is reportedly exploring a collaboration with Indian shipyards on advanced technologies for the construction of military and coast guard vessels. According to some Indian media, projects on the table range from hulls for severe weather conditions to anti-drone systems, from hybrid and electric propulsion to modular design for multi-role platforms. The parties are also reported to have discussed the joint development of dynamic positioning systems, next-generation thrusters and AI-based decision support.
This emerged from a meeting held on 30 April in New Delhi, where an Italian delegation was received at the headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard. A note from the Indian Ministry of Defence highlights how the initiative forms part of India’s industrial self-reliance strategy known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, through which New Delhi aims to reduce dependence on foreign countries by developing domestic production capabilities, including in the naval defence sector. The meeting was attended by the Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Paramesh Sivamani, Anna Ruffino of the Embassy of Italy and Eugenio Santagata, head of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division.
