TRIESTE – Final approval has arrived for funding for the Servola railway station project. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has signed the decree unlocking around €200 million for infrastructure works in the port of Trieste area, thereby guaranteeing financial coverage for the planned projects.
The signing marks a decisive step for one of the port’s main development projects and, therefore, for Friuli Venezia Giulia’s logistics system. The resources will make it possible to ensure continuity for the investments planned in the former Ferriera area, the steelworks site set to become one of the main hubs for strengthening the port’s rail and intermodal capacity.
The tender for the design and execution of the works had already been launched and then halted over fears — in fact, the certainty — that the works could not be completed within the deadlines imposed by the Complementary Fund to the NRRP. The decree, whose amount is actually €199.6 million, includes the original €180 million and €19 million to cover cost increases.
At present, under a Port Authority measure, the deadline for participation in the tender has been set at 30 July. After the necessary checks, the winner of the tender will be selected by October, barring appeals, which are always possible in procedures of this kind. In the best-case scenario, works should start in the first months of 2027.
The project also includes the junction for connection to the Grande Viabilità road system, which will allow trucks to have direct access to the HHLA PLT Italy terminal.
Friuli Venezia Giulia Region president Massimiliano Fedriga stressed that the decree guarantees the resources needed for the strategic projects of the regional logistics platform, highlighting the result of cooperation between the Government, the Region and the Port System Authority. According to the governor, the measure strengthens Friuli Venezia Giulia’s role as a hub for international traffic and provides certainty for the planned investments, with positive effects on the regional economy and employment.
