TRIESTE – The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has allocated €3 million to railway undertakings to mitigate the impact of summer infrastructure works on the rail corridor linking Italy with Austria.

The main measure for the logistics sector included in the regional budget adjustment is the allocation of €3 million in support of railway undertakings operating in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The measure was approved by the Fourth Committee of the Regional Council, which is responsible for infrastructure, territorial planning and civil protection.

The funding, as explained by Regional Councillor for Infrastructure Cristina Amirante, is intended to mitigate the negative impact on freight traffic caused by the temporary reduction in rail operations on the section between the Italian-Austrian border, Thörl and Carnia. The infrastructure works, scheduled between August and September 2026 and involving the closure of the Tarvisio border crossing, will affect rail connections to and from the ports of Trieste, Monfalcone and Porto Nogaro, with unavoidable repercussions for railway undertakings and the logistics sector.

The allocation represents an extraordinary measure to support operators during a particularly critical period, given the strategic importance of the Austrian corridor for the regional port system’s rail freight traffic to Central European markets.
