TRIESTE – The new Secretary General of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority has explicitly cited the international Free Port of Trieste as a driver of development.

In his first remarks, during a press conference, Natale Ditel explicitly referred to the port’s unique status. «The Free Port of Trieste is the only international one. Today we need to develop a deeper awareness of how to make the most of it, and I am convinced that we have all the requirements to do so».
The reference is to Annex VIII of the Treaty of Paris, which recognises Trieste as having a special legal regime at international level.

In the strategic framework outlined by the Secretary General, infrastructure remains central. Among the priorities he cited are Pier VIII and the Servola station, seen as key steps to support growth and improve the port’s operating capacity.

On the traffic front, Ditel identified as the first objective «the recovery of the 27.1% of container volumes lost after the end of the 2M alliance». Replying to journalists’ questions, the newly appointed Secretary General made clear that he has a precise idea of how to proceed.
«But I want to keep that confidential because it would be unfair to the economic operators whom we, together with the president (Consalvo, editor’s note), may meet, and there we need to study a roadmap, but I have a great deal of confidence. I think it is traffic that can very definitely be recovered».
