TRIESTE – A blackout during manoeuvring and subsequent controls cost the Behcet C an administrative stop on Wednesday morning by the Port Authority of Venice. Following an inspection carried out by the Port State Control (PSC) staff, specialized in safety checks on Italian and foreign merchant ships, the bulk carrier (160 meters long, the flag of Panama, built in 2009 and coming from Mariupol in Ukraine) was administratively detained. The day before yesterday morning, the ship had a blackout during manoeuvres while sailing in the Malamocco channel towards Porto Marghera. The event was without consequences for the safety of navigation and traffic, thanks to the prompt action of the pilots of the port of Venice and the towing service. The detention was a consequence of the inspection results carried out yesterday, during which serious discrepancies were found regarding the composition of the crew, the efficiency of the life-saving equipment, and the navigation safety aids. The vessel – at the moment moored in Porto Marghera – will be able to resume its voyage towards its next destination (Istanbul), only after the Flag State has verified the safety conditions, in accordance with international conventions, and after the PSC Unit has re-inspected the vessel, finding that the irregularities have been rectified.
