TRIESTE – DFDS has appointed Michael Hansen as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective by 1 July 2026, starting the handover process with current CEO Torben Carlsen.

The decision follows the succession process announced last November and comes at a sensitive time for the Danish group, which is working through a transition aimed at improving its economic and financial performance. The Board of Directors has identified the short-term priority as a turnaround in results, alongside more structural work on network optimisation and organic growth.

Hansen joins from Hempel, where he led a strategic transformation that delivered positive effects on profitability, cash flow and operational scalability. Previously, he built extensive experience within the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group, holding top roles in several parts of the world, including CEO of Seago Line and Global Head of Sales at Maersk Line. The leadership change comes as DFDS is also dealing with increasingly intense competition in the Mediterranean. In recent months, as reported on these pages, the company has felt the impact of growing competition from the Grimaldi Group on services between the Port of Trieste and Turkey, one of the key corridors for Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax traffic. Grimaldi’s entry and expansion have contributed to pressure on DFDS volumes and to declining traffic on some strategic routes.

The need to make the most of the network and regain commercial competitiveness is therefore one of the central themes highlighted by the Board. Hansen, for his part, stressed the goal of returning the group to profitable growth, focusing on people engagement, operational efficiency and stronger sustainability performance. The appointment marks a key step for DFDS as it seeks to reposition itself in a more crowded and competitive market environment, particularly along the Motorway of the Sea corridor between Trieste and Turkey, where strategic choices in the coming months will have a direct impact on the balance among operators.
